Irish Traditional Singing – Breda McKinney.

Breda's introduction to traditional singing came much earlier than her Classical music training. She learned unaccompanied traditional songs from her grandfather and her interest in this genre has produced two theses on traditional singing in Inishowen, Co. Donegal, the second of which was submitted for an MPhil Masters degree to University College Cork. During her studies at University College Cork Breda was awarded a bursary by the Irish Government Research Scholarship Scheme to assist her with her research.

Guest singing appearances at folk song festivals include: the Inishowen Singing Seminar (Co. Donegal), the English National Festival of Folk Music and Song, Sidmouth International Festival of Folk Music and Dance, Cork Singer's Circle: It's a Fine Thing to Sing, Cullerlie Festival of Folksong (Scotland) and Girvan Folk Festival (Scotland).

In 2004 Breda presented her research in the form of a seminar paper at the British Forum for Ethnomusicology Conference: “Ethnomusicology at Home” and a lecture at the annual McGlinchey Summer School: “The Tradition of Singing in Families and Communities in Inishowen.” This lecture was subsequently published in a volume of the proceedings from the Summer School, titled: It's Us Their Talking About.

Breda has been interviewed by song collector and publisher Jimmy McBride on Inishowen Community Radio and recordings of her singing continue to be played on McBride’s weekly programme. In February 2007 Breda recorded several songs composed by musician and entertainer Packie Manus Byrne, for a TV documentary on Packie's life and musical achievements.
